Norman Neufeldt opened Norbar Fabrics Company on Long Island in 1944. Almost 70 years later, the company remains a privately-held decorative textile wholesaler supplying interior designers, architects and the hotel trade. Only now, the business is in Boca Raton.

The company recently renewed its lease for 37,000 square feet of office and warehouse space at Boca Commerce Center. This makes Danburg Properties of Boca Raton the only landlord Norbar’s had since arriving in South Florida in 1993.

“It was big when we signed our first lease,” says David Neufeldt, Norman’s son and company president. “But we’ve grown into it over time.”

While Norbar (named for Norman and another early business entity – Barney Textiles) has grown, so has the family – and each member’s role in the company. It’s still headed by CEO Norman, 88. Norman’s daughter (and David’s sister), Susan Harris, is vice president. She manages advertising and merchandising with her daughter, Marni Davret. David’s son, Jason, works with showrooms and sales representatives nationwide.

As proprietors of a family-run business, the Neufeldts pride themselves on quality, service and close relations with their long-time customers. Norbar’s design department stocks current and innovative design trends in traditional, transitional and contemporary fabrics. More than 95% of all fabrics are stocked on-site in the Boca Raton warehouse, and most orders are shipped within 24 hours.

Thinking back to their relocation, David Neufeldt admits that the business could have been based anywhere. The company was thriving on Long Island, but his parents already had a winter home in Palm Beach County. Like many South Florida residents, though, southern warmth trumps northern cold on any winter day, he says. Along the way, the move has suited the family well.

“When we moved down here in 1993, the area around us was very rural,” he says, “but the growth of Boca Raton has made it a great place raise our families and grow our business.”
