For Danburg Management’s salute to opening day of the 2011 baseball season, we focus on one of 2010’s record setters, Aroldis Chapman. Many of you are probably asking who is Aroldis Chapman, what did he do, and what in the world does that have to do with Danburg Management ?

Chapman defected from the Cuban National Baseball Team in 2009. He signed a $30 million contract with the Cincinnati Reds due to the fact that he can throw a baseball faster than any human on the planet. On September 24, 2010 in San Diego he threw a fastball to Tony Gwynn Jr. The pitch seemed routine, a bit low and inside, but it was clocked at 105.1 miles per hour, the fastest official reading ever in a major league game.

I got the chance to meet Chapman at Danburg Management’s Boca Industrial Park in early February. Chapman came to ProSource Baseball, an 11,600 sf baseball training facility in Boca Industrial Park (see panel to left) to work with the former Cuban national pitching coach Miguel Valdez. This is an example of the quality of the advisory staff at the newly opened ProSource, which aims to be South Florida’s premier baseball training facility.

I was also invited to watch Chapman throw a bullpen session at the nearby American Heritage School in Delray Beach and shoot some video. As a ballplayer myself, a huge fan and as the parent of a pitcher, I wanted to see what 105 looked like. I also wanted to see how he does it.

The first thing you notice about Chapman is his size at 6’4” and 195 lbs. as well as his athletic build. His motion is remarkably smooth. As a student of pitching mechanics, what really stood out for me about Chapman is the tremendous torque he creates by rotating his torso over his legs as he drives to the plate.

We at Danburg Management wish Aroldis the best for the 2011 season. At only 23 years of age with a record-setting fastball, he has the tools to be one of the best ever. He is also left-handed, which makes him even a more prized commodity. As impressed as I was with his velocity, I was equally impressed with his slider and change-up, although he is still developing these pitches. According to scouts, the key for Chapman will be to learn how to command all of his pitches and throw them for strikes. We will be watching with interest and look forward to the 2011 baseball season.
